CAMERA CLUB COUNCIL OF TENNESSEE WEST TENNESSEE SPRING EVENT FRIDAY, MARCH 31 - SUNDAY, APRIL 2, 2017

WELCOME FROM THE JACKSON PHOTO CLUB

To all 3ct Members:

The following is the itinerary for out 3CT Spring Outing Event. It is planned for the weekend of Friday March 31st thru Sunday April 2nd. We know you will enjoy the events we have planned. It will be a busy and exciting weekend full of good food, and fun times with old and new friends. Come early if you can and take part in our Friday “Early-Bird” events. Friday night we will get together at the Old Country Store for our dinner and our ‘Meet & Greet” This dinner is the official start of weekend and we will have all the information you need at that time.

This year our Saturday trips require more travel time so they are “all day” trips. This is different than events where we had morning and then afternoon events. Therefore you will choose only one “big” trip on Saturday. We will be sure to be back in Jackson in time to get ready for dinner and the VERY exciting program that is planned for Saturday night.

We look forward to meeting and seeing you there. If you need anything before then please call me personally @ 731 695 3032. You can also email me at tommy@tommyazbill.com or message me on Facebook.

“Monarch of the Skies” by Dr. Danny Kimberlin

In 2003 I scheduled a trip to the Transvolcanic Mountains in SW Mexico to visit the overwintering site of the monarch butterfly. It was to be a fateful year. Two days prior to my departure news flashed around the world that a rare hard freeze had killed over half of the 600 million butterflies present in the sanctuaries that year. I decided to go anyway, to witness, record, and learn from this devastating event.

The monarch is the only butterfly to undertake a 3,000 mile migration south to escape winter, flying from Canada to Mexico in a journey that has been called heroic. For nearly a century scientists searched for their destination; the fabled overwintering site. They enlisted the help of citizen scientists across three countries. The eureka moment finally came in 1975 when an American engineer working in Mexico happened upon a truly staggering phenomenon, a mountaintop “shingled and sparkling” with butterflies. Within a few months the story was the cover article of National Geographic Magazine and the rest is history.

But the happy ending was not to last. In 1995 the monarch population in Mexico reached an all-time high of one billion. Then, in 2014, the obligatory bust occurred in catastrophic proportions. Monarch numbers fell to 30 million, a 90 percent crash that captured the attention of the world. The three nations involved, Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, initiated valiant measures in an effort to save “everyone’s favorite insect.” This program will tell of my trip to Mexico, and the amazing story of the monarch butterfly and its epic migration. We will also explore the causes of the population crash, and what we all can do about it.
